BCM 325 Blog Post 1. Pitch Comments and Critical Self Evaluation

The content of this post is a summary of the three peer reviews of DA pitches for BCM325 – Future Cultures at UOW. As part of BCM325, we are required to comment on three other student’s DA pitches to show engagement with other students. We are then to self-reflect on going through this process.

Giving critical feedback on a peer’s conceptual idea of a project is extremely hard, while I could purpose about things they haven’t thought of or expressed or could have done differently in a 3-minute pitch. It would be better practice via a group constructive brainstorming medium with multiple peers at once prior to the pitch than a commentary after an official pitch in my opinion but with the current situation with COVID-19 we have to make do.

The three pitches I looked at were Georgie’s mood blanket, Sam’s bookstagram and Amelia’s let’s talk about adhd.

While I found them all informative and I offered what commented support I could as all three projects were very short future projects and very, I mean very personal and niche I found it difficult to really engage with their subject matter. While my project is large scale future studies and I can relate it to the subject matter. I found it really difficult to conceptualise their personal projects with BCM325 subject matter as most the subject matter looks into long term future studies not the short term (the next ten weeks).

All in all, engaging with other student’s ideas was a helpful experience for not only my own DA but for my understanding of how others look at Future Cultures BCM325 and what they are looking to get out of it. I do wish that this engagement was done as more and editorial meeting or brainstorming activity rather than an analysis after the fact one. Because as it is with an official pitch stating the methodology, I have high doubt that any of these comments will drastically change how another student progresses with their DA.

Our Planet BCM325 DA Pitch

Our Planet Pitch By Corey Moore

For my DA I would like to take a deep look into how long our planet has left. How much impact we as humans have put on the planet. Are we passed the point of no return? Is radical change needed/achievable? Can we save our planet? And if not, what options does the future of humanity have? Will we be colonising Mars? How far away is that?

I want to look at case studies done in the scientific field and look at what science is predicting not just about the future of global warming but other axis/boundaries that could cause our planet to stop being able to support life. population growth, food production, deforestation etc.

In 2009, Johan Rockström led an international group of for thinking academics, who came up with a system of frameworks for us to understand a precondition for sustainable development. The framework theorizes that Earth has a system of boundaries that should not be crossed in order for earth to support the safe operating space for humanity.

Book by Johan Rockström

explore and highlight emerging technologies/practices that are helping reverse the effects we are having on the planet and hopefully prolonging the time we have for our planet to support us.

look at if we can’t save life on our planet, what is being done to save humanity.

Look into what is happening regarding Mars. How is Mars going to support human life? How are we going to get there? who is paying?

I’m hopeful for my DA to be a digital imprint of acknowledging where life on earth is, what we need to do, and what we will have to do as a Plan B if we fail. Also it can call for debate and scrutiny allowing me to engage with others to talk about our planet and bring more people on board with the idea of saving life on it.

One thing I don’t want this to be is akin to a political statement like those of Greta Thunberg condemning those that don’t recycle. I want it to be more like a Bill Nye science based hey this is where we are, here are some cool things we are doing to save the world!

An Ode to Constructive Criticism

Josephine Doyle

I gave feedback to Daniel Whitney, Lydia McGahey and Tobias Thomas about their respective project betas on future cultures. Each of their BCM325 projects ‘Future Societies’, ‘Our World, Our Future’ and ‘Where the Future is Taking You’ effectively address the DA focus of considering the future in the next 5, 10, 25 or 50 years.

As explained in Future Cultures – Artificial Intelligence: Predictions and Revolutions, predictions about future cultures can be categorised. Futurists will be either pessimistic (believe AI will extinct humans), pragmatic (believe AI will duplicate or augment future abilities), doubtful (don’t believe AI is a threat) or optimistic (believe AI surpassing human intelligence is positive). Daniel, Lydia and Tobias’ projects each present elements of these categories.

I referred to the BCM325 beta presentation marking rubric when proving comments.

  • Marketing shift to humans focusing on creative processes and letting numbers chose where to spend
  • AI in marketing 5-10 years?

Key Points:

  • feedback received and implemented
  • what’s the exact frame
  • public interaction well
  • looking at GDP effect on diet as a starting point if its a close future

Comment 3: Melanie’s DA Beta

Quick summary of DA:

Melanie’s own summary “In this DA we break down technologies depicted in future societies to see if they would in fact work in reality”

Key Points:

  • creative forecasting building on others
  • string futurists link
  • start with those you can access for a feedback loop
  • technology rather than film based interactions suggested
  • outrageous claims/catchy lines suggested to get attention
  • other mediums directing to blog suggested

My Learnings:

  • evaluating my cross disciplinary knowledge of marketing into my DA is something I hadn’t even considered until trying to help others
  • I believe I provided a different perspective to hopeful help peers further their DA mostly with engagement ideas
  • other people are working in groups which I hadn’t even considered maybe its something I need to think about in future to create more wholistic products
  • The click bait attention span of the world currently
  • Looking into multiple futurists connections into my content and also the week 2 lecture of sci-fi future predictions and how that lines up with my own DA

The Future is Now for More Women in Leadership

Josephine Doyle

The trajectory of my BCM325 project has changed quite a bit since my original pitch.

So far in the project, I have explored our past and current women in leadership in Australian politics and sport.

A popular TikTok audio of Julia Guillard’s Misogny Speech

The next topics I will be researching are the women in leadership roles in the entertainment industry. The media I create will make particular note of prominent issues such as the gender pay gap and the Me Too Movement in the entertainment industry and profile the women who are leading change in these areas. I will also be addressing representation issues and the consequences of this on the future of women in entertainment and the effect on female consumers.

Forecasting the forecast factories

-My BCM325 DA Beta-

Timeline:

the timeline is now 1 video every 1.5 weeks now that I have defined concepts for what goes into each video and have broken the elements out from each factory game I want to focus on and have looked into some of the similar existing technologies that can be forecast to develop into the technology seen in the games.

Gathering further engagement:

I plan to get further public engagement through reddit posts with my forecasting videos based on each game specifically posted into each of their seperate reddit bases and to not be overly self promoting in a single space.

BCM 325 Peer Digital Artefact Pitch Commentary

Taylor Sumelj

In BCM 325, we were required to comment and provide constructive feedback on three of our peers’ digital artefact pitches, after which we had to then to critically evaluate the feedback we provided. In doing so, it led me to critically evaluate my own digital artefact pitch and identify areas I did not address as well as I had originally thought, which will ultimately aid the construction of my eventual beta presentation towards the semester’s end. In particular, I identified a need to incorporate the subject lecture content in my digital artefact, which is something I overlooked during the initial pitch stage. I believe these peer comments have also enhanced my constructive feedback writing, which will hopefully improve the overall quality of my comments during the second round of peer evaluations following the beta presentation.

Factories of the future

Methodology:

I intend on creating 4 video essays posted to YouTube on my previously used channel. Each video will address a different element/peice of the production processes from factory games eg: convey belts, assemblers, rockets. This will allow me to talk/start discussion on these ideas and use this content to hopeful create engagement in factory game communities on reddit.

Timeline:

I plan to make a total of 4 of these videos during the semester with 2 being release before the beta approximately 2 weeks apart and 2 after hopefully receiving feedback from audience and BCM peers before the DA is due.

Mira.Me project: looking at the future from the present

Upside Down

“The future is now”. That is exactly what my DA is all about. In times when the future has never been so uncertain and everything is changing day-by-day, looking into the present was the way I found to reflect on my future – and also keep a record of how the pandemic evolved here and in South America over the weeks.

We learnt throughout the session that futurists “analyse data from the past to offer predictions to the future”, and I believe the “Quarantine diaries” series can be important in the long-term future as historical documentation of this period of the pandemic. Right now, predictions point that Brazil could surpass the United States in the number of coronavirus deaths by the end of July. It is the country that is dealing the worse with the pandemic situation and it will definitely be in the history books for that. So, in…
