The content of this post is a summary of the three peer reviews of DA pitches for BCM325 – Future Cultures at UOW. As part of BCM325, we are required to comment on three other student’s DA pitches to show engagement with other students. We are then to self-reflect on going through this process.
Giving critical feedback on a peer’s conceptual idea of a project is extremely hard, while I could purpose about things they haven’t thought of or expressed or could have done differently in a 3-minute pitch. It would be better practice via a group constructive brainstorming medium with multiple peers at once prior to the pitch than a commentary after an official pitch in my opinion but with the current situation with COVID-19 we have to make do.
The three pitches I looked at were Georgie’s mood blanket, Sam’s bookstagram and Amelia’s let’s talk about adhd.
While I found them all informative and I offered what commented support I could as all three projects were very short future projects and very, I mean very personal and niche I found it difficult to really engage with their subject matter. While my project is large scale future studies and I can relate it to the subject matter. I found it really difficult to conceptualise their personal projects with BCM325 subject matter as most the subject matter looks into long term future studies not the short term (the next ten weeks).
All in all, engaging with other student’s ideas was a helpful experience for not only my own DA but for my understanding of how others look at Future Cultures BCM325 and what they are looking to get out of it. I do wish that this engagement was done as more and editorial meeting or brainstorming activity rather than an analysis after the fact one. Because as it is with an official pitch stating the methodology, I have high doubt that any of these comments will drastically change how another student progresses with their DA.
My Digital Artefact is my dogs Instagram and TikTok accounts. In this project I will explore possible dog futures in terms of health and lifestyle and how these are reflected in social media. I have always loved dogs and got my first one 10 years ago. Six years ago, I started a dog Instagram account for him, where I get to practice my photography skills and post about my dog life for fun. By 2019 I was invited to events and morning TV shows as well getting free products from brands. Since then, my account has grown, and I now have 9k + followers. I also have more than 2k followers on TikTok.

Initial research shows that there has been a significant change in the way that dogs are viewed by people. No longer are dogs chained to a kennel and kept in the back-garden, they are now seen as people’s “fur-babies” and a treasured family member.
Back in the 1980s people couldn’t have imagined how people would be treating their pets today.
Recent research found that buying things for their pets made millennials happy during the Covid lockdown and was a form of self-care.
According to Moore, if there is anything you can take away from Bell’s Futures Studies book is: “it is very much concerned with the now, because if you focus purely on prediction you are unlikely to have the right information to come up with a viable plan of action for the future.”
Dog parties are definitely the future now and show how the dog community/world has changed in such short period of time.
This weekend I am having a dog party for my youngest puppy, and brands have given me free products. I hope the party will help my account to grow a bit, but at the same time it is just for fun.
Possible: I believe the dog world on Instagram will continue to grow as well as on other social media platforms like TikTok, but it may be harder to be seen as more and more people want to be a part of this lifestyle with their furry friend.
Probable: In 10 years’ time I also think there will be more mixed dog breeds as more people become aware of the health benefits of mixed dogs compared to the genetic problems experienced by pure bred dogs. For example, many Cavaliers have heart issues and don’t live past 5 years, whereas Cavoodles who are a mix of poodle and Cavalier live for much longer, Poodle cross dogs are also better for people who have allergies and there may be more poodle type crosses in the future.
It will be interesting to see in ten years’ time, if Cavoodles are still seen as a mix breed, or if they are considered a breed in their own right. Also, will mixed dog breeds lead to original breeds with health problems dying out?
Preferable: In 10 years I would like to see dogs being more accepted and welcomed in Australian society as they are in countries overseas like America, where they are allowed on planes and in restaurants.
What drives my thinking is that due to the massive outbreak of Covid19, many people are suddenly forced to stop what they are doing and can only stay at home or be quarantined. This brings up the bad problem of negative emotions, which is anxiety. For me, Covid19 has kept me in a constant state of anxiety, and I interviewed my family and friends who were pretty much all the same. I take into account that Covid19 has gone from a short-term future to maybe mid-5 years, or even a long term, so my DA is very helpful both now and in the future. My main creative background is under the influence of Covid19, but not only by it. I’m going to create a community to post on different platforms, I call it Sun House. Whether you are depressed or not, or you are constantly anxious, or even someone who is infected, who is isolating and feeling lonely, you can get involved, “you are not fighting alone.”
The DA methodology
At present, I have posted a question on twitter, first soliciting opinions and collecting information. In the next few weeks, I will share the community I created on different platforms, such as Facebook, twitter, reddit, YouTube, Instagram, for users to participate. I will test my DA results by looking at pageviews, retweets and user feedback. And I will also post on platforms commonly used by Chinese, such as Weibo and Xiaohongshu. Because anxiety is a big problem facing the world, I need more people involved. I will use the hashtag #Sun House in everything I share, and everyone can share anything positive. In addition, I will frequently update anxiety-relieving content, which may be articles, or practical methods, or posting local outdoor activities to participate in, etc. I’m still thinking and perfecting this part. Through the continuous expansion of the number of users, I will increase the popularity of my community.
Potential background research
COVID-19 poses a clear threat to mental health. Shown in research data from Queensland researchers. The prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders in Europe and the Americas is very high, most of which are in the range of 25.4% – 35%, and even as high as 38.7% in the most severe areas, which is a very bad data. So I think it should be taken seriously. The decrease in social interaction brought about by Covid19 has led to an increase in people’s loneliness. Wu’s article mentioned that loneliness can predict anxiety, depression, and lonely people often lack social support. Encouraging lonely people to strengthen social connections can reduce loneliness. Secondly, Brasler mentioned that anxiety is contagious, so I do not advocate spreading anxiety, but actively spread positive energy in my way to connect everyone.
Reflect on subject lectures to address the DA Focus
What we do now will affect the future, and the future depends to a large extent on the results of our current efforts. Just as Chris continuously emphasized in the lecture that the future is the present, of course, we also need to analyze the recent past. Also like the advanced things in ‘2001 a space odyssey’ we saw in class, such as video calls, it is not actually a prediction of the future, but an inspiration for future development. Second, we need to be imaginative if we want to build the culture of the future, so that we can make new connections and see new relationships. Therefore, we must pay attention to the current research and development in order to better effectively use it in the future.
DA’ s public utility
The first is to make our future and society better, which is related to the mental health of users. My DA creates a good atmosphere space for users, creates a sense of happiness for them, and shows a life full of positivity and positive energy. The interaction between users can shorten the sense of distance from each other, so that people who are also troubled can feel more intimate and surrounded by love. Feedback from users on different platforms also allows me to improve the solution.

Once again, I forgot to add background music, so please byo music (thanks!).
I’m creating a social media plan for my boss to follow over the coming weeks to see whether I would like to pursue social media management in the future and whether she would like to continue with a social media manager.
It was this report that finalised my desire to pitch the idea to my boss to ask if I could take “creative control” of her social media accounts, without actually having access to them, as a test for both myself and her.
“Social media is an effective promotional media for businesses because it builds visitor relations, and incurs a small amount of time.”
The Feedback Loop
While the feedback loop of my blogs will mostly just involve myself, it will still play an important part in the outcome of this digital artefact. It will allow me to review my thoughts and feelings while working with a client who has sole responsibility of following and adhering to the plan I create for them. The feedback from my client will also be extremely important as her thoughts will determine how the content and plan is amended or iterated based on feedback from the online audience. Posts will encourage audiences to act or react to a post which will be an important part of the feedback loop in play.
Creating a social media plan will consist of:
taking photos for instagram static posts and stories, as well as facebook posts
creating captions (instagram) and statuses (facebook)
creating a mix of relevant hashtags to post with each image
looking at analytics to determine which day and what time posts will have the most engagement
The blogs that contain my findings and feelings about the task will be posted every two weeks (as you will see below) to this wordpress blog so that they are all in an easy to access space for myself and others to analyse in the future.
As a visual learner and thinker, I have planned out a timeline in a table so that I can see where I am up to in regards to what the client is expecting when, and what I am expecting of myself at any point during the semester. This will also help to keep me accountable when blogging. This also allows me to see how much time I have for each task and gives me a chance to properly and effectively manage my time.
“If we can learn from history, we can also learn from possible futures”
Live tweeting and BCM 325. For Future cultures we are watching different movies together as screenings throughout the session. While we do this we tweet together on the #bcm325 hashtag on twitter I engage with this account.
This blog will be a look back at my contributions and an analysis of what worked what didn’t and how I can ups my game in the future. Due to Time zone differences I have been watching the BCM325 screenings at a different time to the rest of the class which will change in the future but is a core part of my current live tweeting adventure.
The most class tweet interaction I got was for West World where I had time to watch the screening before the class screen and guessed where to schedule my tweets during the tutorial.
this seems to indicate that timing is much more of a factor and while random bots and people interacted with some of my tweets outside of the BCM 325 class:
I think this interaction is mostly just showing me that it is more important for me to be timely with my tweeting than necessarily the content they contain.
this is evident from probably my two best discussions with multiple tweets coming from West World:
for this response I was probably within 1.5 hours of the screening ending to respond and again be responded to. This only backs up my previous thoughts
Here was a similar story, a tweet I had scheduled had been guess correctly to match when people were seeing and discussing this idea during the screening.
as you can see though this didn’t always start a discussion and often ended like this:
I would comment but by the time people come across it the opportunity was missed and people just drop a like sometimes or nothing but the discussion is over.
This seemingly may not appear to help me going forward. However, this indicates that even when I have planned tweets scheduling them is not a great idea (if I can be there for the screening) so that you can time it to the exact right moment of the film. This I think will be crucial for me going forward into the second half of the screenings where I have seen the majority of them before. This will allow greater pre planning which is currently done in notes on my iPad before, during and after my own screening time:
Whilst there wasn’t always high engagement with my tweets a few of them got quality engagement in the for of a tutor retweet and so far I have used this to help inform future weeks tweeting. This is due to the fact it is the most consistent feedback mechanism I have had up to this point.
Most of the tweets under this banner have been informative with deeper analysis or informative with a bit of humour (well at least I think so).
I have also been retweeting points that I resonate with or have reshaped how I view the movie and liking those I find funny or informative but not quite as significant. However I don’t think there is much to be learned from this as it is hard to contribute to engagement of certain tweets when everyone else is offline. I endeavour to work on this as I head into screening with my tutorial group from next week. I plan to post more question based tweets aimed at creating discussion then I have been recently to make the most of this opportunity going forward but also learning from my own reflection here and other students tweeting reflections.
Chelsea is creating a 5 year plan for Chae an online content creation business. with a main focus of podcast development over that time and continuing with other content.
Main comment points:
a good integration of an existing project into a future thinking
are you are trying to tackle 2 projects, 1 creating a plan for Chae and 2 forecasting/talking about the future of Chae through your podcast
Good academic and relevant research into podcasts popularity, podcast function and business growth
good use of hyperlinks throughout your contextual statement
I think this DA idea is similar to mine at first two different ideas where one is more thought out then the other but it has not yet been decided on which DA to stick with but I am glad I chose one and talked this through with Angus (My BCM325 tutor)
My academic research is showing to be more and more lacking as I read more of these pitches
I could more effective showcase some of my research with hyperlinks in my contextual statement and a bibliography
Last we are looking at Jack’s pitch which you can find Here.
Jack is looking at the future of music and its accessibility both production and consumption and showcasing this through YouTube video essays.
Main comment points:
well structure flow with clear progression through pitch video
not really much researching backing links to BCM325 but it does address the future in a general way
can easily add academic research looking at past patterns to help identify future music trends and industry articles like this
good to hear it has utility for you and those you are producing it for these are the best projects for uni from my experience
after viewing this pitch I realise my comments on the previous two pitches were lacking comment about audience as neither pitch addressed audience well and that is something I forgot was needed after doing my own pitch
Pitch is very reminiscent of my in person pitches for previous BCM subjects and I think their might have been a bit too much focus on aesthetic of the video over subject research which is something I think I also can do a-lot
This pitch showed me a lot of the things I am also doing poorly and how easy they are spotted in someone else’s work and how I need to try and be more self aware of these things going. forward.
I intend on creating 4 video essays posted to YouTube on my previously used channel. Each video will address a different element/peice of the production processes from factory games eg: convey belts, assemblers, rockets. This will allow me to talk/start discussion on these ideas and use this content to hopeful create engagement in factory game communities on reddit.
I plan to make a total of 4 of these videos during the semester with 2 being release before the beta approximately 2 weeks apart and 2 after hopefully receiving feedback from audience and BCM peers before the DA is due.

Aquilah Productions has become a major part of Bachelor and Communications degree. Whether it be part of a assessment or not, I have been developing it since i was in hight school for a way for me to express my creativity and my professional portfolio.
‘Brands’ notoriously have difficulty retaining interest over time (Preece et al. 2018, p. 331). And, this is especially true for niche accounts like mine and is integral that i must continue to adapt to the continuous paradigm shifts in modern media in order to stay relevant in the current media climate.
